Prompt engineering

Prompt engineering is the professional skill of asking an artificial intelligence properly. It is the process of learning how to phrase your questions and commands so that you get exactly what you want from the AI. It resembles the situation where, instead of typing a bare “cake recipe” into a search engine, you write “a simple apple cake recipe without nuts, ready in under 30 minutes”. By learning how to build and tune your instructions, you can markedly improve the quality of the answers, images or anything else an AI produces. In essence, you become a better prompter for the artificial intelligence.

Prompt engineering is a discipline within artificial intelligence concerned with designing, phrasing and optimising input instructions (prompts) for generative models. The aim is to obtain the most accurate, relevant and highest-quality output. The process includes techniques such as specifying context, defining the output format, providing examples (few-shot learning), and iteratively refining queries based on analysis of the model’s responses. Prompt engineering is a key skill for making effective use of large language and multimodal models, since the quality of the output depends directly on the quality of the input.
